An Interview With Ahli

We spoke with up-and-coming artist Ahli about their inspiration, new music, and what’s to come!

When did you start and what inspired you to start making music?
My parents really wanted me to play piano from a young age so I started as a classical music nerd. I only started songwriting though in the third grade because of this boy I liked. He was starting a band (that everyone was in because it was the third grade) and they needed a songwriter and I told him I definitely was one (I was super not). Though I lasted in the band for a day (He decided it was an all boys’ band literally the day after I wrote my first song), I realized pretty young that songwriting was something that I was supposed to be doing!

How would describe your style or approach?
There’s this saying that one of the professors at my old school said a lot that really summed songwriting to me,”Three Chords and the Truth”. I try to be as genuine as possibly in my music, whether it be “Past Life” or any track to follow, there’s always a personal story in it and a universal feeling I am trying to convey. Most of my songs I finish and I always feel like trying to ask the question “Hey, can you like, relate to this?”. lol, It’s always starts on production then moves into really personal things.

What can you tell us about your newest track “Past Life”? What do you hope people take away from it?
I can tell you that “Past Life” is the retro-synth pop ballad of my DREAMS! I co-produced it with a friend of mine, Michael Edwards, and it took a lot of work but it is definitely something worth dancing to. It’s a departure from my other released tracks because it is the first track I’ve truly had a hand in all musical production. It’s really my world and the type of music I love, and you can hear it clearly in the song itself. What I hope people take away from it, or feel I guess, is that feeling of triumph when you’re younger with your first love. It’s like “hey I freaking found you, and this feels so right and I like you and this seems like it’s permanent, let’s lock this down even though we don’t know whats going on,etc”, and it’s completely crazy and amazing and carries you away a lot. “Past Life” is what came of me feeling like that, and I hope when people hear it they get a moment to get swept up in that nostalgia.

What else do you have planned creatively for 2020?
I am actually planning on moving to Nashville in the next two months to pursue songwriting full time! I also plan on releasing an EP I’ve been working on for the last year entitled “Twinsize”.

What’s the best thing fans can do to support you?
Fans can support me by streaming/buying “Past Life” on May 8th and sharing it! Whether it be on their playlists, or posting a story with me tagged in it, or just rocking out in your car to it! Any support right now for artists is crucial and super appreciated.
